NHS privatisation:

Fight that stinker with everything you've got. We underwent the same bloody bullshit here in Alberta 13 years ago. The politicians and accountants took over the heath care system, and under a government that was totally driven by neo-con ideology, decimated the heath care system here to "prove" that we needed privatization. To make sure the public system didn't work, they terminated the employment of a few thousand highly competent staff (myself included), and then just stuck that workload on the folks who were left. When I talk to people in the nursing or medical-technical fields now they all say the same thing ... they hate their work and can hardly wait to get out ... just the kind of person you want looking after your sick child.

I'm not totally against some limited privatization, as long as no extra-billing for service is allowed. The system we have here allows for limited privatization, but you can only charge Alberta Health whatever it's going rate is for the service. There are a few exceptions, but most privatization in Alberta involves testing labs. This works well, as it gives much quicker access to a required test, and it means that the hospital system does not get clogged up with testing out-patients.

The thing is, it has to be very well-thought-out. I can't be some hairball, shifty scheme that a crackpot politician and an investment banker have come up with.

If anyone thinks a totally private system is great, have a look at the disaster that is the U.S. medical system.

On that happy note :-)

Cheers,
Ian
